Erica Dueger, an accomplished epidemiologist and veteran triathlete was living her dream, working for the World Health Organization (WHO) in the Philippines, and preparing for her next triathlon, when she was injured in a bike accident. She sustained a brain injury and spinal cord injury. When Erica first spoke after the accident, it was not in her first language, English, but in her husband Jose’s native tongue Spanish. She began to regain her memory 8 weeks after the accident and had to relearn how to do everything from talking to eating, to taking care of her basic needs. Erica is back at work in Manila. She hopes to start training for triathlons again soon.
